Initially imagined by Dr. B. C. Roy, North Bengal Medical College and Hospital was laid out in 1968 as the First Medical College of North Bengal. The arranging was executed by Ajit Kumar Panja, the then state wellbeing clergyman. Prof. Ajit Kr. Duttagupta joined as the primary authority head of the school which was then known as North Bengal University Medical College. NBUMC was rechristened in August 1978 to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital and the authoritative control went from North Bengal University to Govt. of West Bengal.
The premedical classes began on 6.11.67 in a shoddy plan at Jackson Medical School, Jalpaiguri. second to sixth cluster of understudies embraced their premedical course at Raigunj University College. seventh cluster onwards, the understudies began their premedical course at NBMC grounds, Sushrutanagar, their own place. Classes for first year MBBS course for first bunch began on 18.11.68 in NBU grounds. MBBS classes began in Sushrutanagar, the current site of NBMC in 1972.
